A Quick Lesson in Folly Beach Ecology

Ever wonder why the ocean is so murky on Folly Beach – visibility typically isn’t more than a couple feet. People often mistake this murkiness for dirty or polluted water, but that’s not the case at all.  In fact the coastal waters of Folly Beach are actually teeming with an incredible amount of life. Millions upon millions of phytoplankton dwell in coastal and marsh areas of South Carolina providing a vital food and nourishment source for our waters. Just to give you an idea of how much life we’re talking about — approximately 1 million organisms can be found in a single teaspoon of water, wow! So those crystal clear waters of the Caribbean are kind of like a watery-desert when you compare it to the water we have here, who knew?!
